ASUU STRIKE UPDATE: SUSPENDED?
FG releases 16.8 billion Naira to ASUU to meet their demands.
It has been approximately 3 months since the academic staff union of universities embarked on their nationwide strike. The strike which began On 5th November 2018, a response by ASUU to the non implementation of promises made to them in 2009.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Saturday the 2nd of February, Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu made it known that 16.8 billion Naira had been released to ASUU to settle the outstanding arrears it has with the union. he said this also stating that the FG had resolved all issues with the union and are waiting fr the end of their industrial action.
the minister said the FG had reached an agreement with ASUU on the following issues;
- Review of the polytechnic act- the amended document the government awaits transmittal to the office of the president Muhammadu buhari. the minister has also ordered the minister of finance Zainab Ahmed to source for 30 billion additional funds for polytechnics and colleges f education.
- For state owned polytechnics, the national board fr technical education has been directed to strengthen its regulatory mechanism including creating anew template for accreditation t address observed weakness.
- The government will provide alternative funding for the stalled renegotiation in the polytechnics sub-sector. this he said is a show f the governments commitment to continuous dialogue with the unions.
The minister noted that the Federal government had reached an agreement with ASUU and expressed optimism that the strike will be called off anytime soon.
